Kayaking

One of my favorite pastimes is kayaking. I have a 17’-long red Prijon sea kayak. I purchased the kayak in 2001 and have since installed a rudder and a light for night kayaking.

Paddling away in the Everglades

I first started paddling in bays and graduated to rivers and now oceans. I enjoy all 3 environments, but my favorite is the latter, especially rough seas. I love it when the waves come crashing over the bow.

I got my friend Heather hooked and she got a sea kayak. She’s also a camping aficionado with all the cool gear like light weight sleeping bags, tent, burners, etc. We combined gear and started going out on expeditions. Okay, not quite, but they were fun overnighters.

How did we fit all of that in our kayaks?

We’ve gone to the Everglades twice. First time was for one night, the second trip we stayed for 2 nights/3 days. We packed so much gear: liters of water, peanut butter, bug spray, compass, maps, melted chocolate, etc. We then kayaked 7-10 miles to our chickee (wooden dock) to sleep for the night. If you didn’t find your chickee, you would be forced to sleep in your kayak bbecause there was no dry land.

Home, Sweet, Home

My favorite part of the trip was sleeping by the water. Your body naturally falls asleep with the setting sun and lapping surf. You wake up to the rising sun in peaceful silence.

I can’t wait to explore the east coast and the Keys.
