I applied to and interviewed with 3 different schools: 1 in-state pulic, 1 out-of-state public, and 1 private.
From personal experence and from talking to others, the first interview was the hardest because you're so nervous. As you've probably heard before, try to relax and just be yourself. I wish I did on my first interview with UF. I don't feel like I came across as myself.
Some people say that UF only looks at numbers. I disagree. I know dental students who had ok grades and good DAT scores. They didn't have 3.9s or 4.0s GPAs. But, they were all very confident and personable during their interviews.
Okay, that's about all the interview advice I have. Relax, be yourself, arrive early, and dress confidently. However, I can tell you about the rest of my interviews.
As for questions, at UF I was asked about things I did with my hands to show manual
dexterity. Of course, why I wanted to be a dentist. Oh, one more thing. Dr. S at UF kept asking me with a smile, "Is that all?" (pause) "Anything else you would like to add?" (pause). It baffled me because I felt like there was something I was suppose to say. I talked to another girl and she said she got the same thing. Weird.
My second interview was in early December with West Virginia. We first met all the interviewers and the Dean who came across as a very nice and sincere woman. Then we broke up into 4's (2 interviews and 2 interviewees). I went first and felt like I was being interrogated. Why I want to be a dentist? How about my husband? Our plans? Do we have any family nearby? How did I do in my science courses?
But I got my acceptance letter a few days after the interview. I think they were just testing me, see if I really wanted to go there. I know it's harder to get in when you're out-of-state. I really did want to go there. I was mentally ready until...
I got a letter for my third interview at Nova. Nova's interview was very relaxed. What do I like to do on my spare time? Why dentistry? They even had big, beautiful cookies to offer me. :)
Both WVU and NSU were great schools to me, however, to be closer to our friends and families, we opted for NSU.
