Why I want to be a dentist Here's a question I've been asked often. My Aunt Debbie died in November 2003 which was the impetus for me quitting my job and seeking a new career. Designing was fun, but engineering consisted more of report writing and filling out permits. I was miserable. Up to that point, I was sustained by validation like raises and promotions, but that changed after her death. When looking for a new career, my first choice was veterinary medicine. After talking to local vets and shadowing a clinic, I realized that although I love pets, this was not the right career for me. I married into a family of DOs (osteopaths) so naturally I looked into that. Again, I found that it was not for me. Then a high school friend who was in dental school told me to consider dentistry. I did so reluctantly, but after some research, I found it really intriguing. Some thought it was a radical leap, but it wasn’t. I wanted the contact with patients and the satisfaction of helping people. I love problem solving and working with tools – and I could be my own boss.
