Getting in

I first shadowed my own dentist, Dr. John Thee who offered encouragement and advice. Other dentists I have shadowed or spoken to include Dr. Amy Anderson and Dr. Golbarg Smith who were both great role models.

(Also many, many thanks to Dr. Bruce Crawford, Dr. Roy Clark, and the St. Petersburg's Bay Center for Jaw Surgery office for all the teeth they collected for me!)

Paul and I then picked 3 schools: University of Florida (UF), Nova Southeastern University (NSU), and West Virginia University (WVU).

I quit my job with PBS&J in May 2004 and went back to school full time from May 2004-May 2005 to complete pre-dental prerequisites. I applied to UF, NSU, and WVU in June 2004.

I received my first interview with UF in October. Unfortunately, my interview fell on the same date as the Pixies concert, so I had to sell my tickets. I had an interview with WVU in December and one with NSU in January.

I liked all 3 schools. UF was in-state tuition and located in Gainesville, a town I was quite familiar. It also has a great academic reputation. WVU, like UF, was an older facility, but I loved small town Morgantown and the faculty was extremely genuine and nice. NSU had top of the line facilities on a beautiful campus located near Ft. Lauderdale. The faculty also seemed down to earth.

I got into WVU and NSU but was wait-listed with UF. My husband and I decided on NSU since it was closer to family. In June 2005, one month before the big move to Ft. Lauderdale, I got the phone call from UF stating I got in! It was a difficult decision, but I went with NSU. I have no regrets, except maybe selling those Pixies tickets.
